PIAZZA
NAVONA
The square was given a face-lift
in the mid-seventeeth century by Pope Innocent X°, who build most
of the grandiose palaces that surround it and commisioned Borromini,
supposedly stands on the spot where Saint Agnes, exposed naked to the
public in the stadium, miraculously grew hair to cover herself. There's
more work by Caravaggio down Via della Scrofa, in the French national
church of San Luigi dei Francesi, in the lost chapel on the left: early
works, describing the life and martyrdom of Saint Matthew, best of which
is the7 Calling of St. Matthew on the left wall. Matthew is the dissolute-looking
youth on the far left, illuminated by a shaft of sunlight.
